Traces of human habitation at Byblos stretch back to 5,000 BC, and it has been a major trading centre for every major civilisation of the Mediterranean since then. The Crusader fortress affords beautiful views of the sea, and visitors watch the sunset from the fresh seafood restaurants of its little stone harbour.
